Updated: Mar 17

Looking for free things to do in Raleigh?

Explore 35 museums, parks, trails, and local events you can enjoy in Raleigh, NC without spending a dime.

If you think exploring a city has to be expensive, Raleigh is here to prove otherwise. The City of Oaks is packed with free museums, scenic lakes, miles of greenway trails, and community events happening almost every week. In fact, Raleigh is often called the “Smithsonian of the South” thanks to its incredible lineup of museums that don’t charge admission.

That means you can spend the day:

  • standing beneath a massive dinosaur skeleton

  • wandering through a 164-acre outdoor art park

  • biking along a river greenway

  • or watching live music downtown

…and still have money left for dinner.

One of the things I love most about living in Raleigh is how easy it is to fill a day with fun without spending much at all. Between the parks, lakes, gardens, festivals, and historic neighborhoods, there’s always something new to explore.

Whether you're planning a family day out, a budget-friendly date, or just something fun to do on the weekend, this guide shares 35 of the best free (or almost free) things to do in Raleigh.

Some are well-known attractions. Others are local favorites and hidden gems.

Either way, your wallet will thank you.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is the largest natural history museum in the Southeast and one of Raleigh’s most popular attractions. Inside you'll find four floors of exhibits exploring the natural world—from dinosaurs and giant whale skeletons to live animals and hands-on science displays.
